Judge’s Commentary:

What did you like best about this book?
THE BONUS is an extremely well-researched historical novel set post WWI. The author, Georgia Lowe, not only thoroughly researched the subject of bonuses promised to WWI veterans, but is herself the daughter of two Bonus Marchers. The subject was interesting and one in which I had no familiarity, yet Lowe’s skillful creation of characters who are appealing made what could have been a dry subject both emotional and intriguing. The inclusion of photographs from the era lent even more credibility to the book.  The ending with Bonnie and Myrna brought a smile to my face. Lowe’s prose is well written and easy to read. Her characters, their goals and conflicts, blend beautifully to create a book readers will thoroughly enjoy.

How can the author improve this book?
THE BONUS is an exceptional book. One of my difficulties as a contest judge is, when I thoroughly enjoy a book, to find areas where it might be improved. I found so much to praise about THE BONUS, from the author’s engaging style to the photos included in the book, I feel as if I’m quibbling to suggest improvements. A reader might find the interior type to be more comfortable on their eyes. My biggest disappointment is that because the book is self-published it may not find the distribution it deserves. Author Georgia Lowe has proven that it’s possible to take a potentially dry historical subject and turn it into a novel that is emotionally evocative, poignant and entertaining.

The Bonus was nominated summer 2011 for the GlobalEbookAwards.
